2005 Northeast Regional Meeting Highlights

The Northeast Region recently held its 2005 annual meeting in Albany, New York. The three-day event provided technology transfer professionals from both inside and outside the region opportunities to network, catch up on happenings within the FLC, and hear about topics that are having a large impact on today’s technology transfer efforts.

The meeting kicked off with a welcome reception on September 21 at the Albany Marriott Hotel, which enabled attendees to catch up on the latest happenings at their facilities and unwind in an informal setting. The following day the meeting shifted to nearby Watervliet Arsenal, where Regional Coordinator Hans Kohler officially welcomed meeting participants. The morning session included several presentations addressing the issues of international licensing and patents, as well as export controls. Session speakers included Sander Rabin of Whiteman Osterman & Hanna LLP. Tim Wittig of GEO-Centers, Inc.; and Garry Grossman of Schiff Hardin LLP.

The second half of the September 22 session focused on technology transfer facilities in the Albany area. Overviews were presented about these sites, including the Albany Center for Advanced Technology in Nanomaterials and Nanoelectronics, Watervliet Arsenal, and U.S. Army Benet Laboratories. Following the presentation, attendees toured Watervliet Arsenal, where they learned firsthand about a number of successful technology transfer efforts in which the facility has been involved.
Day two of the meeting concluded with a fun networking social at Saratoga Racetrack, where the attendees dined, shopped, and watched harness races.

The highlights of the final day of the meeting, which took place at the Albany Marriott on September 23, included an awards ceremony honoring the four recipients of the 2005 Northeast Regional Award and an overview of the National Small Arms Center (NSAC) by Frank Puzycki. The NSAC is a virtual center consisting of U.S. industry, academia, federal laboratories, and not-for-profit partners involved in product and process development and improvements, as well as product engineering, maintenance engineering and demilitarization.

Proceedings for the meeting, which include more photos and PDF versions of key presentations, are now available on the Northeast Region website.
