The Northeast Region recently presented its annual awards honoring individuals and laboratories for outstanding achievements in technology transfer. The award winners were recognized at a ceremony during the 2005 regional meeting in Albany, New York. Among the winners were:

Lee Greenberg, of U.S. Army Benet Laboratories in Watervliet, New York, received the Regional Coordinator’s Excellence Award for his many years of service and leadership in technology transfer issues. Among Greenberg’s accomplishments is creating partnerships with the local community that resulted in local, national, and international corporations using Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) to use Army facilities and equipment for technology transfer.

The Armaments Research Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) of Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, received the Regional Laboratory Award for extraordinary efforts in furthering technology transfer activities. In particular, ARDEC has led the way in a number of efforts, including the establishment of intellectual property protection for weapons and ammunition systems, resulting in lucrative foreign licensing; the creation of a technology incubator on a military base; and working with a nonprofit organization to test devices for use in homeland security, as well as developing training scenarios for first responders.

Tim Wittig, of GEO-Centers in Rockville, Maryland, received the Regional Appreciation Award for his many years providing service in educational presentations and innovative insights in technology transfer. Wittig’s training programs have proved to be a valuable asset to the region by enabling its members to more effectively conduct technology transfer by expanding their knowledge of laws, regulations, and tools.

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, based in Newport, Rhode Island, received the Excellence in Technology Transfer Award for the Data Extraction and Mining Software Tool. This technology is a mathematical, probabilistic classification tool that employs intelligent feature and pattern selection algorithms. Unlike other classification methods, DEMIST is able to handle information such as credit applications with answers left blank. As a result, DEMIST has applications in areas such as pattern recognition, credit scoring, insurance ratings, and job applicant screening.

This award is presented to the FLC Laboratory Representative who made significant contributions to the FLC program during the past year.

Tim Wittig (center) of GEO-Centers is presented with the Regional Appreciation Award. This award is presented to an individual who is not a direct employee of a government-owned and operated (GOGO) or a government-owned contractor-operated (GOCO) organization, who has made a significant contribution to the federal technology transfer program.

Theresa Baus (center) of Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport is presented with the Excellence in Technology Transfer Award. This award is presented to regional laboratory employee(s) who have accomplished outstanding work in the process of transferring federally developed technology to the marketplace.
