2006 Northeast Regional Award Winners Honored
The Northeast Region recently presented its annual awards honoring individuals and laboratories for outstanding achievements in technology transfer. The award winners were recognized at a ceremony during the 2006 regional meeting in Utica, New York. Among the winners were:

FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC), located near Atlantic City, New Jersey, received the Excellence in Technology Transfer Award for its successful transfer of the Microscale Combustion Calorimeter (MCC). WJHTC conducts extensive research to improve aircraft fire safety, including the development and testing of fire-resistant materials that will significantly reduce the number of deaths caused by burning cabin materials in aircraft accidents. In a fire, the temperature at which a combustible material ignites, the rate at which the material releases heat as it burns, and the maximum amount of heat that can be released by burning are the primary indicators of the material's hazard to life and property. The MCC is an instrument and method that measures all of these fire hazard indicators in a single, rapid, and quantitative test under fire-like conditions using a small amount (milligrams) of substance and produces results in minutes instead of hours. This technology has been licensed and marketed internationally, and is considered the most significant advance in fire safety testing in nearly 20 years. Ultimately, the use of the MCC will be expanded to a number of industries where scientists and engineers study the flammability of materials. |

Dr. Stanley H. Smith, of S.H. Smith Associates in Montville, New Jersey, received the Regional Appreciation Award for his continuous and outstanding service to the FLC. An active member during his nearly 20-year affiliation with the FLC, Dr. Smith's accomplishments include serving on the National Advisory Council and as an evaluator on the national level for the FLC's awards program. His other accomplishments include establishing the Stevens Graduate Program at U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command (CECOM), Fort Monmouth; consulting for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency on the seminal R&D program for Smart Weapons; serving as chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology; and currently organizing the Biennial U.S. Army CECOM Homeland Security Conference in collaboration with the Transportation Security Administration. |
The Northeast Region congratulates the winners on a job well done.
