Hello and welcome to the final Northeast Region newsletter for 2011. It has been an extremely busy year for the Region, with our laboratories involved in more partnerships with industry, academia, and state and local governments than ever before. These partnerships will benefit all parties, with increased profiles for the labs and profits for their partners. This will ultimately result in strengthening our local economies, which couldn't happen at a better time. Read more

USDA ARS — A Better Test for a Potato Pest
A U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientist has created a new weapon in the war against the potato cyst nematode (PCN)—a diagnostic test that identifies the type of nematode infesting a grower's field. Read more
Brookhaven Lab Wins Two R&D 100 Awards for Imaging Devices Used in Scientific Research
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has won two R&D 100 Awards for developing imaging tools that will help researchers study materials ranging from seventeenth-century paintings to photovoltaics. The new devices promise to unlock scientific secrets with greater depth and coverage. Read more
How PPPL Supports Invention
Since ancient times, humans have invented items, from fire-starting materials to the wheel. That spirit of invention is alive at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), where scientists and engineers are building devices to produce fusion energy, and many staffers are working and planning for the next big breakthrough. Meixler Receives State of New Jersey Meritorious Service Medal
Lewis Meixler, head of technology transfer and applications research at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), recently received the State of New Jersey Meritorious Service Medal for his service to the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Major General Glenn K. Reith of the N.J. National Guard awarded the medal to Meixler and 12 other state residents for their service on the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Committee. Read more
