Message From the Regional Coordinator
Welcome to the spring/summer 2006 issue of FLC Northeast News. It was great to see so many of you in Minneapolis for the national meeting. This year’s meeting proved to be a very successful one for the Northeast Region, as we received five FLC awards. In addition, thanks to those who attended our breakout meeting. I was really impressed with the give and take of ideas and your enthusiasm for the milestones we have mapped out for the upcoming year. I left Minneapolis feeling that the Northeast Region is poised to have a year that will exceed our expectations. Read more

Spotlight on: AFRL - Rome Research Site
The Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Rome Research Site traces its history to 1917, when the U.S. Army Signal Corps established a radio laboratory at Fort Monmouth, N.J. Watson Laboratories, located in nearby Red Bank, was an offshoot of the original radio laboratory, and it is from Watson Laboratories that Rome research and development evolved. Read more
FAA Center Tests New Taxiway Screens
Airport safety researchers at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center near Atlantic City, N.J., have created a prototype taxiway screen that can help prevent runway incursions at airports with taxiways that go well beyond the ends of runways. These screens can be placed at the end of a runway to block the view between that runway and an end-around taxiway. End-around taxiways are built beyond the 1,000-foot runway safety area. Read more
AFRL Technology Featured on HBO Forensics Special
Computer technology developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and transitioned to law enforcement by the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center Northeast (NLECTC-NE) was featured this spring in a segment of the HBO series Autopsy: Sex, Lies and Murder. Read more

2006 Northeast Regional Meeting
Join us at the 2006 Northeast Regional Meeting in Rome, N.Y., September 18-20. This year’s agenda includes informative sessions on licensing options for the technology transfer professional; interpreting a potential partner’s business plans; assessing the worth of your technologies; prime contractors vs. program managers, as well as presentations from local high-tech facilities on how partnerships with the federal government have made a positive impact. You will also be able to see technology transfer in action with tours of both the Air Force Research Laboratory-Rome Facility, and the Newport Test Facility. Read more
2006 Northeast Regional Award Winners Honored
The FLC recently presented its 2006 national awards honoring individuals and laboratories for exceptional achievements in technology transfer, and Northeast Region laboratories and individuals received five of the awards. The winners—three of which also received 2005 Northeast Regional Awards—were recognized at a ceremony during the national meeting in Minneapolis.

Crash Test Bodes Well for Rail Passenger Safety
The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center of Cambridge, Mass., recently conducted a full-scale crash test of passenger rail cars at the Department of Transportation’s rail testing facility in Pueblo, Colo. The testing, which took place in March, was part of the Center’s major research into new technologies that could vastly improve the rail cars’ crashworthiness. This effort was designed to determine the viability of innovative, energy-absorbing designs for commuter rail cars, as well as passenger seats and tables, to better protect rail passengers and crew members. Bird-like Aircraft Developed at PPPL
The next time a small bird perches on a ledge outside your window, beware; it could be a surveillance device! David Cylinder, a researcher at New Jersey’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, is creating innovative, bird-like airframes for micro-aircraft vehicles that could carry sensors for intelligence gathering and radar jamming. Cylinder’s creation is part of his work with the Naval Research Laboratory to develop autonomous vehicle systems for use in various military applications. Read more |

New X-ray Delivery Method Could Improve Radiation Therapy
Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), along with colleagues at Stony Brook University, the IRCCS NEUROMED Medical Center in Italy, and Georgetown University, say that improvements made to an experimental form of radiation therapy could make the technique more effective, leading to use in hospitals. Results on the improved method, which was tested in rats, were published online in June in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Read more
